Rheinmetall and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann are poised to deliver 88 Boxer multirole armored combat vehicles to the Lithuanian military. Valued at approximately €390 million, this crucial export contract is expected to span from 2017 to 2021. Together with Germany and the Netherlands, Lithuania will become the third NATO country to utilize this battle-proven, highly fortified, high-mobility combat platform.
The contract was signed on 22 August 2016 in Vilnius through OCCAR, the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation, which subsequently engaged ARTEC GmbH – a collaboration between Rheinmetall and KMW – to provide the Boxers. These units will be outfitted as infantry fighting vehicles featuring a turret-mounted 30mm automatic cannon.
Owing to its sophisticated composite armor, the Boxer ranks among the most secure 8×8 protected vehicles globally. Additionally, it offers exceptional mobility both on and off-road, even in challenging terrains. Equipped with a robust 530 kW (720 HP) turbocharged diesel engine, the Boxer can achieve speeds exceeding 100 km/h while maintaining a combat weight of 36.5 tonnes. The vehicle’s modular design – comprising a driver cab and mission modules – results in remarkable adaptability and versatility.
The Bundeswehr currently operates 405 of these combat vehicles, while the Dutch military possesses an additional 200. Experience gained in Afghanistan underscores the Boxer’s vital role in military sustainment and mobility. Positive tactical outcomes and the encouraging results from Lithuanian field trials played a significant role in the Baltic nation’s decision to select the Boxer. The Lithuanian forces will refer to the vehicle as the Vilkas, translating to ‘wolf’.
