Poland and MBDA Forge New Frontiers with Historic NAREW Initiative
MBDA has finalized a partnership with Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa S.A. (PGZ) to support PGZ’s implementation ofthe NAREW air defense initiative for the Polish Armed Forces.
NAREW will equip Poland with a sophisticated mobile air defense system capable of addressing contemporary and forthcoming threats at ranges exceeding 40 km, employing the CAMM-ER missile developed through collaboration between the UK and Italy. The PGZ-NAREW Consortium received the executive contracts for NAREW in September from the Polish Armament Agency.
The current agreement allows PGZ to execute these executive contracts, which are valued at over £4 billion, by finalizing MBDA’s exceptional transfer of vital technologies and expertise to PGZ. This enables the PGZ-NAREW Consortium to manufacture more than 1,000 CAMM-ER air defense missiles and over 100 launchers for the NAREW program in Poland.
NAREW underscores the strengthening relationship between MBDA and PGZ and offers further proof of the achievements of the Strategic Cooperation Agreement signed between the entities in 2017. The technology transfer associated with NAREW and the consequent growth of Polish industries is exceptional within the UK-Poland defense collaboration and sets the stage for deepened engagements in complex weaponry with Poland.
Eric Béranger, CEO of MBDA, remarked: “The magnitude and aspiration of NAREW are genuinely remarkable – forging a Polish air defense shield utilizing our CAMM missile family and iLaunchers that will safeguard the entirety of Poland’s airspace. The technology transfer through NAREW will revolutionize Poland’s independent complex weapon capabilities, and we take great pride in the confidence placed in us by Poland while looking forward to a promising future with the eleven members of the PGZ-NAREW Consortium.”
NAREW represents the latest in a sequence of air defense initiatives utilizing the CAMM missile family, for which MBDA and PGZ have been collaboratively contracted in Poland. This follows the Mala Narew urgent operational requirement contract established in 2022 and now operational, the PILICA+ short-range air defense system contracted earlier in 2023, efforts on the MIECZNIK frigate program, and exploratory studies for the future joint development of CAMM-MR. Furthermore, MBDA and PGZ are also collaborating on the OTTOKAR BRZOZA tank destroyer initiative.
