Revolutionizing Versatility: Rheinmetall Unveils the HX 8×8 All-Terrain Excavator in Collaboration with Slovakia’s CSM Industry
In collaboration with the Slovak firm CSM Industry, Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV) has introduced a new high-mobility multipurpose excavator vehicle based on the HX 8×8 platform. This latest version is derived from RMMV’s established family of logistic vehicles, which are operational globally. It is outfitted with a UDS 214 excavator build-on, a reliable system crafted by the crane and excavator manufacturer CSM located in Tisovec, Slovakia. Tailored specifically for combat engineer tasks and disaster response operations, the HX 8×8 Excavator showcases advanced engineering.
Capable of rotating 360 degrees, the build-on integrates an extendable telescopic arm that extends up to 14.60 meters. It can accommodate various attachments: in addition to the excavator bucket, options include a hook or hydraulic drum cutter. This versatile apparatus can lift loads up to 7.5 tons, functioning effectively as an auxiliary crane. If desired, the operator’s cab for the excavator can be armored according to standard STANAG levels and equipped with a comprehensive ventilation system.
Like RMMV’s entire HX lineup, the HX 8×8 is a military off-the-shelf solution designed to endure the most rigorous military environments, ensuring exceptional mobility even in challenging terrain. In operational mode, the base model of the vehicle has a weight of 28 tons.
Its MAN D2676 diesel engine produces a power output of 387 kW or 540 hp, enabling the HX 8×8 to reach a maximum speed of 90 km/h. The vehicle is capable of ascending inclines of 60 percent and can traverse water depths of up to 1.5 meters. Additionally, the HX 8×8 can be fitted with Rheinmetall’s secured Integrated Armoured Cabin (IAC) or prepared for optional use. The vehicle can also be equipped with a remotely operated weapon station for self-protection.
As part of the HX family – with over 16,000 units currently active worldwide – it provides benefits in terms of maintenance, repairs, and training. Several NATO countries are already equipped with HX family trucks, creating synergistic advantages particularly during multinational missions.
The HX 8×8 Excavator exemplifies Rheinmetall’s collaboration with European and other international partners, extending beyond technical partnerships. Through its alliance with Rheinmetall, CSM is poised to gain access to new export opportunities.
Furthermore, the Düsseldorf-based technological enterprise provides Slovakia with alternatives for partnering with local industries. One prospect includes the manufacturing of infantry fighting vehicles within the NATO nation. This is in connection with an offer from Hungary to produce the cutting-edge Lynx KF41 family of tracked armored vehicles developed by Rheinmetall. The Lynx family is not only notable for its performance metrics but also establishes a new benchmark in defense collaboration among NATO member states and other allied nations. Hungary opted to acquire the Lynx in 2021, with a significant portion of the vehicles set to be produced in Hungary in partnership with Rheinmetall. Should neighboring Slovakia, also a NATO member, select the Lynx, a considerable portion of its new vehicle fleet would similarly be manufactured locally, facilitating extensive cooperation in the defense technology sector, which would enhance added value and secure and expand the nation’s defense technology capabilities.
