Milrem Robotics to Enhance Estonian CV90s with Advanced Engineering Solutions

The foremost European innovator in robotics and autonomous systems, Milrem Robotics, will assist in enhancing the Estonian Defence Forces’ CV90 Infantry Fighting Vehicles by providing engineering proficiency as part of a consortium led by Go Craft and Scania Estonia.

In June 2021, the Estonian Centre of Defence Investment granted Go Craft and Scania Estonia a contract worth 29.3 MEUR for advancing 37 CV90 units acquired from Norway in 2016.

Throughout the upcoming two years, the firms, in collaboration with Milrem Robotics, will refurbish all 37 CV90s and convert 31 into various types of support vehicles, which will include fire support, engineering, and anti-tank functions, specifically tailored to meet the requirements of the Estonian Defence Forces’ 1st Infantry Brigade Scouts Battalion.

Milrem Robotics imparts expertise in engineering, oversees prototyping of the final products, prepares operator and maintenance-oriented documentation, and conducts training focused on operational and maintenance aspects.

“Milrem Robotics has cultivated significant engineering expertise over the past 8 years. We have a robust team in the Nordic region with skills not only in autonomous navigation but also in hybrid propulsion, electrical and mechanical engineering, and systems integration. The Type-X Robotic Combat Vehicle exemplifies these capabilities. This CV90 initiative is a prime illustration that we can collaborate with more conventional and crewed vehicles as well,” stated Kuldar Väärsi, CEO of Milrem Robotics.

“Assigning Go Craft with this highly technical and challenging task is a significant acknowledgment of our efforts thus far, and we take this responsibility seriously. Given the technical complexity and the rigorous timeframe, we have expanded our team and selected subcontractors to bolster our efforts. Milrem Robotics emerged as the optimal choice to lead the mechanical engineering phase, ensuring the final design adheres to all military standards while being ergonomic and user-friendly,” remarked Tormis Saar, Head of Military Field at Go Craft.

“The CV90 support vehicles reconstruction program is the most intricate engineering endeavor entrusted to the Estonian defense sector. This reality underscores the maturity of our industry to tackle large-scale and sophisticated defense projects. Milrem Robotics undoubtedly stands as a beacon of these industrial capabilities, and we eagerly anticipate collaborating with them during the design phase of the project,” expressed Ivar Janson, Strategic Category Manager for Armoured Vehicles at the ECDI.
