Oshkosh Defense Chosen by National Advanced Mobility Consortium to Create Innovative Cold Weather All-Terrain Vehicle Prototype
Oshkosh Defense, LLC, a subsidiary of Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE: OSK), declared today that the National Advanced Mobility Consortium (NAMC) has chosen Oshkosh Defense along with its partner, ST Engineering, to engage in the prototype stage for the U.S. Army’s Cold Weather All-Terrain Vehicle (CATV).
The CATV is an innovative initiative for a tracked vehicle that performs in severe cold climates or arctic settings and is engineered to take the place of the Small Unit Support Vehicles (SUSVs) that have been operational since the early 1980s.
“Oshkosh Defense and ST Engineering combine a wealth of military industry and manufacturing know-how to fulfill the U.S. Army’s requirement for a reliable vehicle that can adeptly navigate in arctic environments,” stated Pat Williams, vice president and general manager of U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps initiatives. “We believe the Oshkosh CATV will empower Soldiers to effectively transport personnel and supplies in the harshest conditions, and we eagerly await putting them in the hands of the end users for examination and assessment.”
The Oshkosh CATV is based on the Bronco 3, a cornerstone of the dependable, exceptionally efficient, and trustworthy Bronco family of vehicles (FoV) by ST Engineering that has been utilized across various nations. The Bronco FoV has undergone over 1,860 miles of performance assessments under arctic conditions, as well as more than 200,000 miles in a combat zone on demanding desert landscapes. The Oshkosh CATV prototypes will feature integrated mission modularity to support diverse configurations. A General Purpose vehicle, for instance, can function as a troop transport, casualty evacuation (CASEVAC), or Command and Control vehicle, easy to transition between setups in the field within 30 minutes by a two-member crew.
“The novel vehicle design will leverage the combined skills of Oshkosh Defense while drawing on the extensive legacy of the Bronco family of vehicles, a tested, resilient, and adaptable articulated platform that has been in service since 2001,” remarked Lee Shiang Long, President/Head, Land Systems, ST Engineering.
Oshkosh Defense and ST Engineering will produce two prototypes – one General Purpose and one Cargo vehicle for assessment and Soldier evaluation in Q3FY21. The prototypes will be appraised on payload capacity, mobility, impact resistance, swimming capability, and transportability. The U.S. Army has indicated intentions to issue a subsequent production contract for up to 200 CATVs in FY22.
