Sagem Secures Major NATO Contract for Over 200 Cutting-Edge JIM-LR Infrared Binoculars

Boulogne-Billancourt, March 24, 2016

Sagem (Safran) has secured a new contract for over 200 JIM-LR long-range multifunction infrared binoculars from a NATO member’s military. This order will also incorporate remote-control terminals and will be supplementary to the JIM-LR units already in service with the nation.

This recent achievement follows JIM-LR orders logged by Sagem at the conclusion of 2015, targeting both international markets and domestic requirements under the JIR-TTA-NG1 initiative, solidifying Sagem’s dominance in the portable optronics sector.

Sagem’s JIM-LR represents a state-of-the-art tactical optronic (electro-optical) apparatus, crafted for surveillance, intelligence gathering, area protection, and target identification missions. The highly integrated JIM-LR consolidates various functions into a single device: day/night (thermal) vision, rangefinding, laser guidance, magnetic compass, image and video capture, GPS, and data transmission.

A fundamental component of the digital warfare landscape, JIM-LR is pivotal in military engagements as part of the instantaneous tactical information network. It has demonstrated itself as a vital factor in soldier safety during asymmetric warfare scenarios.

Sagem has introduced multiple innovative enhancements to the JIM-LR, boosting its capabilities in detection, target identification, system integration, and image processing. Due to its modular architecture, JIM-LR can be paired with a laser designator or Sterna, a geographic North seeker created by Sagem. It is also capable of remote operation through military or civilian networks. When integrated into a fixed or vehicle-mounted station, it serves as the optronic sensor on Sagem’s MOST optronic land surveillance mast.

JIM-LR has established itself as the operational benchmark in this domain, utilized by over 40 nations for intelligence, infantry, artillery, special operations, and border and coastal defense missions. To date, over 9,000 JIM-LR binoculars have been deployed or are on order worldwide, including more than 2,000 units for French armed forces.

The JIM-LR is manufactured in France at Sagem’s facility in Poitiers.
