General Dynamics Launches Innovative HF Communication Systems for Navy’s Advanced Digital Modular Radio

The U.S. Navy has awarded a contract modification to General Dynamics Mission Systems to enhance high-frequency (HF) communication capabilities for the Navy’s four-channel, AN/USC-61(C) Digital Modular Radios (DMR). The 3G High-Frequency 3rd Generation Automatic Link Establishment (ALE) improves transmission speeds between radios by 24% and reduces interference and static that can obstruct clear, high-quality voice communications. It also facilitates enhanced collaboration among U.S. and allied forces, while offering a backup for satellite communications (SATCOM) during times of network overload or unavailability.

“This upgraded HF capability provides sailors and their commanders with a communication advantage through enhanced reliability and greater data capacity, particularly when beyond line of sight networks are not operational,” said Paul Parent, a vice president at General Dynamics Mission Systems. “DMR acts as a more efficient alternative to satellite communications in scenarios where satellite connectivity or bandwidth is limited or non-existent.”

General Dynamics’ software-defined DMR radios play a crucial role in the Navy’s essential communication networks aboard ships and submarines. They offer a wide array of military voice and data channels, including Ultra-High Frequency satellite networks, Very High Frequency and Line of Sight radios, single-channel Ground and Airborne Radio Systems (SINCGARS), as well as various tactical radios. These radios are also equipped with the General Dynamics Advanced Infosec Machine (AIM) encryption chip, which is certified by the NSA for secure transmission of classified information at the Type 1 – Top Secret level and below. Additionally, the radios can operate simultaneously across multiple security levels on all four channels.

The MUOS waveform has recently been integrated into DMR, significantly enhancing the Navy’s beyond line of sight voice and data communications by connecting to the advanced Mobile User Objective System satellite communications network.

General Dynamics Mission Systems’ radio solutions guarantee secure voice and data communications for both U.S. and international military as well as government agency clients. The company also delivers long-term evolution (LTE) broadband communication networks customized for law enforcement, emergency responders, and others requiring dependable connectivity and communication solutions anytime, anywhere.
