Kongsberg Secures Major NOK 16 Billion Contract for Naval Strike Missile Coastal Defense Project with Poland
Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (Kongsberg) has secured a contract valued at around NOK 16 billion (approximately $1.5 billion–Ed.) from the Polish Ministry of National Defence to supply four NSM (Naval Strike Missile) Coastal Defence System (CDS) squadrons.
Poland was the inaugural country to obtain the NSM CDS capability in 2008, subsequently acquiring an additional squadron in 2014. This contract award enhances over a decade of fruitful collaboration between Kongsberg, the Polish Government, and Polish industry. The new shipments are expected to extend into the 2030s.
“This contract represents the largest individual agreement in the history of Kongsberg and marks a significant milestone in our more than 200-year heritage. Poland has been a steadfast partner, and we are honored to formalize this pact. With the evolving security landscape in Europe, Poland is resolute in its dedication to securing vital defence capabilities, and for Kongsberg as an industrial ally, this guarantees predictability for investment and ongoing development to meet these demands,” states Geir Håøy, President and CEO of Kongsberg.
“The NSM coastal defence system is crucial in bolstering nations’ capacity to protect their territory and populace. We are honored to assist Poland in establishing such a capability. The commitment exhibited by the Polish Ministry of National Defence to enhance their NSM CDS is a testament to our trustworthy partnership and reinforces that our system offers the most advanced capability available,” commented Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.
The Coastal Defence System integrates NASAMS command and control with NSM operational functionality. The Polish industry will play a significant role in various aspects of the project, including the communication infrastructure, vehicles, and portions of the command and control system, as well as participating in system integration efforts.
As part of the agreement, Kongsberg will deliver training and technical assistance, including simulators, to empower Polish personnel to perform maintenance services domestically.
The NSM can be launched from both terrestrial and maritime platforms and is currently deployed in, or awaiting delivery to, 12 nations. The NSM is a fifth-generation Strike Missile recognized as the pinnacle of naval strike missile technology globally, initially developed by Kongsberg for the Norwegian Navy. The missile’s stealth architecture complicates detection, and its seeker system facilitates Autonomous Target Recognition of designated targets.
The contract is contingent upon obtaining approved export financing. This financing is anticipated to be finalized within the upcoming weeks.
