Rheinmetall and BAE Systems have today inaugurated a new, independent UK-based collaboration for military vehicle design, production, and support – termed Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL). Located in Telford, West Midlands, this enterprise will sustain approximately 450 jobs throughout the UK and is strategically poised for future expansion.

RBSL aims to significantly contribute to assembling the Boxer 8×8 for the British Army’s Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV) programme along with several other crucial combat vehicle initiatives, while also offering expertise to the British Army’s existing bridging and armoured vehicle collections.

Defence Secretary Penny Mordaunt stated: “This declaration is a definitive affirmation of trust in the UK’s defence sector as a global frontrunner in the crafting, supplying, and support of military vehicles. This promising alliance clearly highlights how Defence is integral to the prosperity agenda. Its advantages will resonate in the West Midlands and across the UK defence supply chain, generating employment, enhancing exports, and ensuring our technical competencies persist into the future.”

RBSL will leverage Rheinmetall’s extensive military vehicle technologies augmented by the additional capabilities and systems provided to the joint venture through BAE Systems’ Land UK division, including Trojan, Terrier, Warrior, military bridging, and the AS90 self-propelled artillery system. RBSL has the potential to generate hundreds of additional jobs in the UK, both in Telford and the broader supply chain.

Peter Hardisty, previously with Rheinmetall UK, has been appointed as Managing Director of the new establishment. He remarked: “RBSL is a new enterprise drawing on the substantial strengths and expertise of both BAE Systems Land UK and Rheinmetall. Our workforce in Telford, Bristol, and Washington (UK) possesses a valuable skill set and profound experience in combat vehicle engineering. With incoming orders, we will be capable of maintaining these proficiencies and expanding in the coming years, pursuing new prospects in the UK and internationally.”

The fresh management team that will guide RBSL into the future also features Carrie White as Finance Director and Phil Simon as Operations Director, both joining from BAE Systems.

Regulatory endorsement for the venture was afforded on 13 June 2019.
