Bundeswehr to Acquire 252 Unarmored Transport Vehicles under Framework Agreement
The German Bundeswehr has granted Rheinmetall an order for 252 unarmored transport vehicles with load capacities of five and fifteen tonnes. This contract is part of the framework agreement established in 2017 for over 2,200 cutting-edge military trucks. The monetary value of this recent order amounts to approximately €92 million, including VAT. Before the conclusion of 2019, Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles GmbH (RMMV) will manufacture and supply the vehicles, which comprise a total of 161 five-tonne trucks and 91 fifteen-tonne trucks. Production of this newly ordered lot will initiate immediately after the completion of the first batch of vehicles, scheduled for delivery in the upcoming months as planned.
Comprising a total of 2,271 unarmored transport vehicles from RMMV’s HX series, the framework contract finalized on 5 July 2017 with the Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology, and In-service Support (BAAINBw) is valued at around €900 million (excluding VAT), incorporating specialized tools and training services. Initially, an order was placed for a batch of 558 vehicles.
By engaging in this extensive project, the Düsseldorf-based group specializing in mobility and security solutions is significantly contributing to the modernization of the Bundeswehr’s extensive truck fleet, which comprises thousands of units. Mainly featuring components produced in Germany, such as engines, axles, gearboxes, and attachments, these vehicles will be assembled at the RMMV facility in Vienna.
Especially concerning multinational operations, the extensive global presence of RMMV vehicles offers substantial advantages regarding interoperability and logistics. Current users include military forces from the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Denmark. Additionally, Norway and Sweden have made considerable purchases of trucks manufactured by RMMV.
