Rheinmetall Unveils Cutting-Edge 40mm Grenade Launcher Ammo for Spain’s Military Forces

Rheinmetall persistently bolsters its stature as a prominent systems provider for 40mm armament and munitions systems. The Group’s South African branch, Rheinmetall Denel Munition, has secured a framework agreement with the Spanish defense forces for the provision of 40mm munitions. This contract, awarded a few weeks prior, spans four years. It entails the supply of 40x53mm high-velocity combat munitions as well as training rounds. A preliminary order in the low single-digit million euro range has already been fulfilled. The initial deliveries of munitions are set to commence in 2022.

The current order placed by Spain encompasses 40x53mm high explosive (HE), high explosive dual-purpose (HEDP), along with training munitions with and without tracer. These are designated for the SB-40 LAG and Mk 19 grenade machine guns, employed by both the army and navy.

The 40x53mm high-velocity (HV) munitions from Rheinmetall Denel Munition achieve a speed of 240 m/s and showcase an effective range of 2,200 meters. The High Explosive Dual Purpose (HEDP) serves as multi-functional munitions. It exhibits a substantial fragmentation and shrapnel impact on soft targets, while also functioning as a shaped charge capable of penetrating lightly armored threats or fortified installations. Its penetrating capability reaches 50mm RHA (Rolled Homogeneous Armor).

Rheinmetall’s offerings in the 40mm caliber further include 40x46mm Low Velocity and 40x51mm Medium Velocity munitions, suitable for various applications. Additionally, the range features fire control systems alongside weapon systems tailored for grenade gunners.

For Rheinmetall Denel Munition, this framework agreement marks another triumph in sales within a NATO nation. It also reaffirms the Rheinmetall subsidiary’s expertise as a systems integrator for indirect fire, delivering inventive and dependable solutions stemming from in-house developed technologies.
