Saab Secures U.S. Army Contract for Revolutionary Carl-Gustaf Weapon System
Saab has secured a long-term framework agreement with the U.S. Army for the latest version of the Carl-Gustaf multi-functional, portable shoulder-fired weapon, known as the M3E1 in U.S. Army operations and M4 internationally. Saab has been granted an $87 million MUSD (around 770 MSEK) Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity contract for M3E1 arms with an initial request of $9.2 million MUSD (approximately 80 MSEK) set for delivery in 2021.
The contract signifies an indefinite delivery and quantity arrangement permitting the U.S. Army to place orders for the newest iteration of the Carl-Gustaf weapon over a 7-year span, with a maximum value of around $87 million (770 MSEK). The Carl-Gustaf systems included in this framework agreement will be utilized by the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, and Special Operations Command.
“The Saab M3E1 is tailored to fulfill the demands of today’s combat personnel. This lightweight and highly efficient recoilless rifle guarantees preparedness on the contemporary battlefield with versatile roles through a diverse range of munitions including counter defilade, anti-structure, and anti-armor,” stated Erik Smith, President and CEO of Saab in the U.S.
The Carl-Gustaf program has been formally recognized in the U.S. since 2013. In 2018, the U.S. Army declared its intention to procure the latest variant of the system. At 14.8 pounds (6.7 kilos), the new model is 28 percent lighter than its predecessor, the M3. In 2019, the U.S. Army entered into a framework deal for Carl-Gustaf ammunition.
