Lithuania Boosts Security with New Mobile Air Defense Contract from Saab
Saab has secured an additional contract from Lithuania for the Mobile Short-Range Air Defense (MSHORAD) solution. The contract amount is SEK 1.2 billion and deliveries are anticipated between 2026-2029.
Saab proclaimed the original MSHORAD order from Lithuania in July 2024. With this supplementary contract, a second battery within the Lithuanian military will receive Saab’s mobile aerial defense capability.
“We are delighted to further assist the Lithuanian Armed Forces’ short-range aerial defense capabilities. MSHORAD is an exceptionally mobile solution that empowers the user to swiftly and effectively detect and neutralize aerial threats,” remarks Görgen Johansson, head of Saab’s Dynamics business area.
“The procurement of the Mobile Short-Range Air Defense System (MSHORAD) will bolster the Lithuanian military’s capability to counter possible enemy air assaults. The mobility of this system is its key strength, making it an indispensable asset for Lithuania,” stated Lithuanian Minister of National Defense Laurynas Kasciunas.
The order encompasses Mobile Firing Units, Mobile Radar Units, and a Command and Control (C2) system. Saab will integrate MSHORAD into JLTV vehicles produced by the U.S. firm Oshkosh prior to delivery to the client.
MSHORAD is Saab’s mobile aerial defense solution. The system is composed of the Mobile Radar Unit featuring the Giraffe 1X radar and the Mobile Firing Unit based on the RBS 70 NG, all interconnected with GBAD C2, which is Saab’s command and control framework for ground-based aerial defense.
