BAE Systems Unleashes Advanced Robotic Tech: Precision Strike on Ground Target with APKWS® Rocket!
BAE Systems’ Robotic Technology Demonstrator (RTD) effectively discharged laser-guided rockets at several terrestrial targets, incorporating human oversight, during the U.S. Army’s tactical exercise at the EDGE 22 event held at Dugway Proving Ground. This evaluation signified the inaugural occasion an APKWS laser-guided rocket has been launched from a robotic combat vehicle (RCV).
The autonomous RTD fulfills the Army’s requirements for an RCV medium alternative. Versatile for multi-mission operations, the RTD is outfitted with a commercially-validated hybrid electric propulsion system and can be armed with a range of sophisticated payloads, including electronic warfare sensors, multiple gun systems, anti-tank guided projectiles, and 2.75” rockets featuring BAE Systems’ APKWS® laser-guidance kit. Additionally, the vehicle can be upgraded with loitering munitions to neutralize armored units and unmanned aerial threats.
“Over the preceding year, we’ve collaborated with top technology enterprises to create an autonomous vehicle that will surpass the Army’s RCV medium specifications,” stated Helen Park, the Future Tech Works director at BAE Systems. “This triumphant demonstration confirms that our unmanned vehicle can be combined and enhanced with state-of-the-art technology, payloads, and weaponry to support diverse mission scenarios and provide advanced capabilities in a multi-domain operational landscape.”
Ground-launched APKWS rockets equip mounted forces with an exceptional ability to engage terrestrial targets and unmanned aerial systems at distances of up to six kilometers. This offers military personnel a budget-friendly solution for precise strikes with greater range than conventional small arms fire, and negates the requirement for aerial assistance.
Future Tech Works (FTX) represents a new initiative within BAE Systems, collaborating closely with engineering specialists and clients to pinpoint, develop, and evaluate solutions catering to future defense requirements. FTX redefines the battlefield to innovate and deliver technologies that enhance service members’ safety, agility, and preparedness against any threat.
BAE Systems is committed to the evolution of combat technologies to assist the Army in deploying the most proficient RCV solution for present and future modernization demands. Efforts on this program are being conducted in Sterling Heights, Mich.
