Korea’s Defense Revolution: Testing the Guardian – Escribano’s ASPIS RWS on Hyundai Rotem’s UGVs
The prominent Spanish defense and engineering firm Escribano Mechanical & Engineering has been chosen to outfit the first trio of Hyundai
Rotem 6X6 UGV prototypes with its GUARDIAN – ASPIS Remote Weapon Station (RWS).
The South Korean Army is assessing the system under actual operational conditions, and it is demonstrating its dependability.
GUARDIAN-ASPIS ranks as the lightest remote weapon station available today. Weighing in at under 90kg, this 2-axis gyro-stabilized unit is adept at performing in both daytime and nighttime missions due to its state-of-the-art electro-optical sensors developed by ESCRIBANO M&E. By incorporating an advanced fire control and targeting system, the modular design of GUARDIAN – ASPIS facilitates the installation of various arms, ranging from 5.56 to 7.62mm machine guns. It has been specifically engineered for integration with multiple types of platforms and vehicles, establishing GUARDIAN – ASPIS as a highly cost-effective defense solution against asymmetric threats and RPA’s.
Additional Integrations
With extensive experience in integrating remote weapon stations and electro-optical systems across various UGV and USV platforms, ESCRIBANO M&E collaborates with several acclaimed international and national firms to deliver diverse unmanned solutions featuring chained platforms, such as the THEMIS vehicle by the Estonian company “MILREM Robotics” or the 8×8 Mission Master wheeled platform in partnership with Rheinmetall, including the UGV MUTT from General Dynamics European Land Systems – Santa Bárbara Sistemas.
ESCRIBANO M&E has also introduced the naval ASPIS RWS variant: SENTINEL ASPIS. This version offers the same operational capabilities while being adapted for marine environments. It has been integrated onto USVs. The advanced technology embedded in these systems supports day-and-night multipurpose missions even in challenging climatic conditions or turbulent waters near the shoreline.
