Rheinmetall has crafted an innovative 60mm mortar tailored for infantry and special operations forces. The RSG60 boasts cutting-edge design and engineering traits that render this indirect fire system exceptionally lightweight and easy to manage. With just a few swift manual modifications, the standard infantry variant weighing 15.8 kg can be transformed into a commando mortar tipping the scales at merely 6.8 kg, eliminating the requirement for tools. This versatility makes the RSG60 a remarkable two-in-one solution.
Depending on the type of ammunition and charges employed, the standard model can achieve distances of up to 3,200 meters. By incorporating a barrel that is thirty centimeters longer, the reach extends by approximately 500 meters. The commando variant of the RSG60 has a firing range of around 2,000 meters.
Measuring about 70 centimeters in length, the barrel is constructed from steel and wrapped in carbon fiber. This combination ensures the necessary durability while reducing weight, leading to a barrel that is roughly 30 percent lighter than traditional steel mortars. The base plate is fashioned from carbon fiber composite material. The innovative layout of this indirect fire system not only conserves space but can be assembled and made ready to fire within seconds. Moreover, by loosening the retaining bolts, the RSG60 can be detached from the base plate in approximately thirty seconds, converting it into a more portable commando mortar.
The development of this state-of-the-art mortar commenced in October 2017 at Rheinmetall Waffe Munition. The company’s aim was to enhance the Group’s diverse range of 60mm ammunition and existing Rheinmetall Electronics fire control technology with a forward-looking weapon system. Consequently, from the outset, the focus of development was on lightweight construction, rapid deployment, and ergonomic design.
The RSG60 has consistently undergone successful test firing, demonstrating its reliability and effectiveness.
