BAE Secures $754M from US Army for Next Phase of Innovative AMPV Program
BAE Systems secured a $754 million contract to persist in the production of the Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV) family of vehicles (FoV) for the U.S. Army.
This contract initiates the second phase of full-rate manufacturing of AMPVs from March 2026 to February 2027.
The versatile AMPV FoV takes the place of vehicles from the Army’s Vietnam War-era M113 family, modernizing the force and offering essential survivability, mobility, and interoperability enhancements to the Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT).
“It’s vital that we keep replacing the M113s and do so at a tempo that guarantees Soldiers are unparalleled on the contemporary battlefield. We are entirely devoted to continuing our swift collaboration with the Army to produce superior AMPVs at an escalated and sustained pace for Soldiers,” stated Bill Sheehy, BAE Systems’ AMPV program director. “This upcoming phase for AMPV advances our cooperative efforts to furnish the ABCT with a combat platform that allows them to successfully carry out missions they will face today and in decades to come, in addition to providing a highly capable vehicle that can navigate with the fleet in the harshest terrains.”
Currently available in five configurations including General Purpose, Mortar Carrier, Medical Evacuation, Medical Treatment, and Mission Command, the AMPV performs in various capacities for the warfighter, with chassis designed as a foundation to adapt to future mission roles.
BAE Systems remains dedicated to the future of the AMPV platform, ensuring that Soldiers are unmatched on the contemporary battlefield. Investments are in progress to develop a more modular chassis that will facilitate the rapid integration of next-generation technologies and capabilities to meet potential future customer requirements.
The Army initially awarded BAE Systems the AMPV engineering and manufacturing development contract in 2014 and finalized a low-rate initial production contract in 2018. This latest achievement follows the program’s full-rate production contract award in August 2023.
BAE Systems disclosed new investments by the company and the U.S. Army to broaden its AMPV production line in York, Pennsylvania, last year. The expansion of AMPV production ensures that BAE Systems possesses the capacity and technology essential to deliver capabilities to the U.S. government more swiftly while bolstering the combat vehicle industrial base. Recently, the AMPV line integrated an additional robotic welding capability, which enhances quality throughput during manufacturing and allows for production expansion to meet rising business demands.
Operational activities for the AMPV program occur throughout BAE Systems’ industrial network, which includes facilities in Aiken, South Carolina; Anniston, Alabama; Phoenix, Arizona; Sterling Heights, Michigan; and York, Pennsylvania.
