Fincantieri to Deliver 8 Frigates to Indonesia

Fincantieri, a leading shipbuilding organization globally, along with the Indonesian Ministry of Defense, has finalized a contract for the delivery of 6 FREMM-class frigates, the enhancement and transfer of 2 Maestrale-class frigates, along with the associated logistical assistance.

This order signifies a remarkable achievement for Fincantieri and for Indonesia, which now operates a fleet of 10 FREMM vessels. The agreement holds substantial importance in bolstering the partnership between the two nations in a pivotal maritime region of the Pacific.

Fincantieri will serve as the primary contractor for the full program. The fabrication of the frigates is expected to generate significant employment opportunities not only for various Italian shipyards within the Group in the forthcoming years but also for additional firms in the industry, including Leonardo, as well as numerous small and medium-sized local enterprises. It will also involve collaboration with the PT-PAL shipyard located on Java island. The enhancement of the two Maestrale-class ships, which Fincantieri will procure from the Italian Navy upon their decommissioning, will additionally take place in Italy.

Giuseppe Bono, CEO of Fincantieri, stated: “The acquisition of an order of this scale positions Fincantieri to take on global leadership in the surface vessel domain and attests to the technological superiority of a project that continues to be regarded as the most advanced in the marketplace, having led to 20 ships for various foreign navies, including contracts and options. This program possesses exceptional strategic significance, both in terms of economic benefit for our nation and for the Italian defense supply chain, furthermore ensuring Fincantieri’s robust positioning in the region, paving the way for concluding additional vital negotiations on other programs already in progress, including in the civilian sector.”

“Lastly, I wish to commend our Navy, which has played a crucial role in collaboratively constructing a vessel that enjoys global acclaim and fully meets its operational requirements,” Bono concluded.

Fincantieri stands as one of the largest shipbuilding enterprises worldwide, uniquely functioning across all high-tech marine industry sectors. It excels in the construction and conversion of cruise, naval, and oil & gas as well as wind offshore vessels, in addition to the manufacturing of systems and component equipment, after-sales services, and marine interior solutions.
