Leonardo DRS Secures Contract for Cutting-Edge Vision Systems to Empower the Australian Army

Leonardo DRS, Inc. (“DRS”) has disclosed today that it has secured a contract from the United States Army to supply thermal Integrated Vision Systems for Assault Breacher Vehicles (ABV) intended for the Australian Land Forces. The $9.6 million agreement facilitates Australian Foreign Military Sales (FMS).

The DRS Integrated Vision Systems (IVS) integrates cutting-edge uncooled thermal innovation into a compact two-axis stabilized gimbal, alongside DRS’ Enhanced Situational Awareness camera system. Once the ABV is outfitted with IVS, it empowers operators to stay shielded while executing their mission with optimal visual awareness surrounding the vehicle.

“We are incredibly enthusiastic to furnish our Australian partners with this sophisticated thermal observation technology that enables users to remain safeguarded within an armored vehicle, while simultaneously providing them with situational awareness of the exterior during operational engagements,” stated Jerry Hathaway, senior vice president and general manager of the DRS Electro-Optical and Infrared Systems (EOIS) business unit. “With this delivery, we are transferring 15 years of expertise in producing ABV IVS systems for the U.S. Army to our Australian partners,” he added.

The ABV IVS Program is an established production initiative, with 220 systems provided to the U.S. Army and Marine Corps from 2007 to 2022.

Beyond its industry-leading cooled and uncooled thermal detectors, the DRS EOIS division specializes in creating and manufacturing small, stabilized gimbals for Unmanned Ground Vehicles and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle applications. These gimbals vary in size from 3” to 8” with a variety of sensor payload configurations. For additional insights into these advanced gimbals, visit our website here.

The Leonardo DRS EOIS division is part of the advanced sensing and computing segment, which has a substantial installed base across the U.S. military. Sensing technology represents a pivotal strategic objective for Leonardo DRS, as the firm consolidates its world-class sensing and laser capabilities for the brave men and women serving in the U.S. armed forces.
