Leonardo DRS Unveils Enhanced Tactical Short-Range Air Defense System

Leonardo DRS, Inc. disclosed today that it has secured a contract from General Dynamics to supply additional mission equipment packages (MEP) for the Maneuver Short Range Air Defense (M-SHORAD) Increment 1 (M-SHORAD Inc. 1) systems. The contract is worth $204 million.

As part of the indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity agreement, the organization is projected to deliver 59 extra MEPs for the initiative. This request comes on the heels of the initial delivery order for 28 production MEPs which are set to commence delivery at the beginning of next year. These production contract assignments stem from a highly successful rapid prototyping endeavor that met an ambitious government testing schedule and deployed four production-like systems in Germany.

Leonardo DRS Land Systems meticulously integrates the MEP prior to providing it to General Dynamics Land Systems, the platform integrator and primary contractor. The M-SHORAD Inc. 1 MEP encompasses Moog’s Reconfigurable Integrated-weapons Platform (RIwP ®) turret, outfitted with various kinetic effectors including the XM914E1 30mm cannon, M240 7.62mm coaxial machine gun, Stinger, and Longbow HELFFIRE missiles. The MEP also features Rada USA’s Multi-Mission Hemispheric Radar (MHR) along with numerous other enabling technologies.

“Leonardo DRS values the Army’s choice to acquire the additional M-SHORAD Inc. 1 systems. Our team is prepared to deliver the mission equipment packages to General Dynamics Land Systems on schedule,” stated Aaron Hankins, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Leonardo DRS Land Systems division. “This capability is critically needed on today’s battlefield, and we are thrilled to contribute to the team delivering it to our troops.”
