Leonardo persists in investing in Australia by inaugurating a new facility in Western Australia, via its subsidiary Selex ES Australia Pty Ltd.
The establishment of this new site reaffirms Leonardo’s dedication to expanding its industrial presence in Australia beyond its existing locations in Melbourne, Victoria, and Nowra, New South Wales. Further growth is anticipated in the coming 18 months. The new facility was revealed at Pacific 2017, a global maritime trade show held in Sydney, Australia, where Leonardo participated (Stand 4F10).
The new center is situated in Rockingham, south of Perth, and will serve as the regional hub for engineering, integration, installation, and long-term support. Its proximity to the Henderson shipyards and Garden Island will enable Leonardo to respond swiftly to naval programs. It will also facilitate partnerships with Western Australian enterprises, fostering a local workforce skilled in defence electronics that complement the robust shipbuilding capabilities of the region.
This site will be essential in Leonardo’s role as the primary system integrator for the SEA1442 phase 4 solution. Under this initiative, Leonardo will deliver a comprehensive suite of cutting-edge communication capabilities for the upgrade and modernization of Australia’s ANZAC frigates. The solution encompasses enhanced external RF communications and internal communication equipment, provision of a high-data-rate line-of-sight channel, and the deployment of a modern communications management system. This capability enhancement will establish a foundation for a maritime architecture vital to future tactical communications for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). It will also support the Australian Defence Force’s network-centric warfare strategy within the maritime domain, facilitating the goal of a genuinely networked RAN.
Michael Lenton, Executive Chairman of Selex ES Australia stated: “This facility exemplifies Leonardo’s commitment to Australia where the company has operated since it first provided torpedoes to the Navies of Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia in 1885. Over many decades, Leonardo has cultivated a significant legacy in Australia, delivering solutions, products, and services for both defence and civil sectors. It’s a long-term endeavor that we take immense pride in and aim to develop further. Leonardo is deeply invested in Australia and has made substantial strides over the past 12 months to significantly enhance local capabilities while also strengthening the national supply chain. We are poised to seize opportunities arising from the recent push in naval capability procurement and intend to demonstrate that our local investment in skills and personnel is as vigorous as our technology transfer from our global operations, even ahead of the upcoming wave of naval contracts.”
