Leonardo Unveils Cutting-Edge Marlin 40 Naval Defense System for Indonesia
Leonardo’s Marlin 40 naval remote weapon system has been chosen to arm two Indonesian Navy PC60 fast patrol boats currently being constructed at the PT Caputra Mitra Sejati shipyard. This decision follows the acquisition in 2021 of four Marlin 40 systems for a pair of PC60 vessels and two Teluk Bintuni-class landing ship tanks (LSTs). Both PC60 and LST will be outfitted with the Marlin 40 Independent Line of Sight (ILOS) variant, the most advanced version of the turret. Additional PC60 and LST vessels are anticipated to be manufactured by Indonesian shipyards for the Navy.
The Marlin 40 turret is a fully digitized apparatus. It is lightweight, compact, and straightforward to assimilate. This means that the turret can be installed on various naval platforms as a primary or secondary defensive system. Equipped for anti-air and anti-surface protection, the Marlin 40 boasts a range exceeding four kilometers, is ITAR-free, and can integrate with all currently-available naval Combat Management Systems (CMS).

The ILOS variant of Marlin 40 selected by the Indonesian Navy is an exceptionally effective precision-fire system that can function autonomously via a local control console. This system gathers and processes targeting information from the turret’s own dedicated electro-optical system, external fire control units, and ship data, ensuring accuracy while providing redundancy. The electro-optical director can pivot independently of the line of fire, delivering comprehensive surveillance through a precise sensor suite consisting of a daylight camera, an InfraRed (IR) camera, and a laser range finder.
This recent contract further enhances Leonardo’s robust collaboration with the Indonesian Navy, which has previously chosen the company for its naval artillery needs. Currently, 38 Indonesian vessels are utilizing Leonardo weapon systems. The Navy’s arsenal includes Leonardo’s Marlin 30, Marlin 40 Twin Barrel, and the 76/62 SuperRapid. The latter stands as the best-selling medium-caliber naval gun mount on the market, adopted by 60 Navies and already deployed on 15 Indonesian Navy vessels.
The Marlin 40 is the newest addition to Leonardo’s lineup of naval defence systems and is actively in service with 30 naval forces around the globe. In addition to the ILOS variant, Marlin 40 is also offered as a 40mm Remotely-Controlled turret. Leonardo additionally provides the Marlin 30 in three variants: RC (Remotely-Controlled), COAX (Coaxial Electro-Optical Sensor Suite), and ILOS (Independent Line of Sight). The choice of Marlin 40 for the Indonesian Navy bolsters Leonardo’s foothold in the Indo-Pacific naval defence systems market.
