Leonardo Secures €150 Million Deal for Cutting-Edge Security Solutions
Leonardo has finalized an agreement with Fincantieri valued at roughly 150 million euros to deliver equipment for the initial two U212 Near Future Submarines (NFS), the first of which is anticipated to be incorporated into the Italian Navy fleet by 2027. This pivotal equipment will bolster the surveillance and defense capabilities of the Italian Navy as they conduct missions beneath the waves in both Italian and global waters.
The agreement encompasses the design and creation of an advanced Combat Management System (CMS) as part of the Italian Navy’s “Naval Law” modernization initiative. This supply is part of a comprehensive program under which Fincantieri is providing two U212 NFS submarines along with optional provisions for an additional two, alongside technical and logistical support.
In conjunction with the CMS, Leonardo will also establish a simulation and training facility at the Italian Navy’s Submarine Centre in Taranto, including a suite of logistical support adding workforce training and a collection of spare components.
The newly developed U212 Near Future Submarines build upon the U212A (Todaro-class) framework while incorporating a variety of technological enhancements. Four U212A submarines commenced service with the Italian Navy in 2006.
This contract signifies a strategic progression for Leonardo in the marine domain. By integrating a submarine CMS into its offerings, Leonardo is expanding its presence in the submarine sector. With similarities between the submarine CMS and Leonardo’s analogous system for surface vessels, the organization anticipates capitalizing on synergies between the two platforms, with investments in innovation benefiting both product categories. The fortification of Leonardo’s core enterprises, particularly by enhancing areas of expertise that span business lines—such as command and control—is foundational to the “Be Tomorrow – Leonardo 2030” strategic agenda. Leonardo is charting pathways to sustainable advancement through leadership in next-generation technologies.
