Leonardo Unveils Cutting-Edge Air Defense Radar at NATO Training Hub in Greece

Leonardo’s Kronos Grand Mobile High Power (GM HP) radar has been selected by the Hellenic Air Force as the comprehensive air and missile defense solution to be deployed at the NAMFI (NATO Missile Firing Installation), the Alliance’s training ground located on the Isle of Crete. This system will guarantee elevated air safety standards during exercises. The announcement was made at the Farnborough International Airshow. The delivery of this sensor, anticipated by 2024, will enhance the Coalition Armed Forces’ premium training, along with the assessment and validation of various systems.

Kronos Grand Mobile High Power is a multifunctional C-band radar engineered for aerial and maritime monitoring and defense. It represents the latest advancement in the Kronos lineup, capable of offering superior performance through the incorporation of enhanced TRMs (Transmit-Receive Modules). The sensor’s Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) technology leverages Leonardo’s proprietary GaAs (Gallium Arsenide) and GaN (Gallium Nitride) production expertise, derived from patented innovations. It is manufactured at the company’s advanced foundry, a state-of-the-art facility focused on the creation of monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMIC – Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits).

Tailored for both terrestrial and maritime applications and offered in static and mobile formats, all Kronos radar systems boast multifunctional and multi-mission capacities optimized to counter diverse threats. Furthermore, the family of sensors includes an innovative L-band development, Kronos Power Shield, specifically crafted for long-range ATBM (Anti Tactical Ballistic Missile) capabilities.

A multitude of clients globally, spanning Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, and South America, are already leveraging the sophisticated Kronos radar technology as the foundational sensor of their integrated air and missile defense systems, with over 40 radars currently operational. Kronos Grand Mobile High Power has been appointed as the surveillance and engagement radar for the Italian variant of the SAMP/T New Generation surface-to-air missile system produced by the Eurosam Consortium (MBDA 66.6% and Thales Group 33.3%).
