Leonardo Unveils Cutting-Edge LIONFISH® Solutions for Royal Netherlands Navy’s Next-Gen Fleet

Already deployed on numerous naval platforms globally, Leonardo’s LIONFISH® suite of defense systems has now been chosen by the Royal Netherlands Navy. The Navy has opted for the “LIONFISH® Top” version to outfit its Holland-class patrol ships, LPD (Landing Platform Dock) and JSS (Joint Support Ship) vessels, Johan de Witt and Karel Doorman classes, as well as Den Helder-class Combat Support Ship.

The LIONFISH® Top is one of three 12.7mm versions in the innovative collection of remotely-operated naval turrets. The “Ultralight” and “Inner Reloading” models are also offered in the same caliber. The firm additionally provides a 20mm “LIONFISH® 20” variant.

Weighing under 300 kg, the LIONFISH® 12.7 Top is notably effective against immediate threats and in unconventional scenarios (ASymmetric Warfare – ASyW). Its performance and precision, even at extended distances, are assured by a cooled infrared sensor that incorporates Leonardo’s Mini Colibrì optics. This feature is standard across the entire turret collection, which can also accommodate an uncooled sensor. Depending on the technology applied, the detection capability can reach up to 12 km.

With a focus on user requirements, Leonardo has developed cutting-edge technologies that proficiently and accurately manage various types of threats, including uncrewed systems.

The LIONFISH® collection is notable for its modular design, lightweight nature, and standardized architecture, enabling the turrets to be installed and utilized on secondary platforms, serving both as primary and secondary defense mechanisms, without necessitating deck penetration. All systems in this collection can autonomously compute firing solutions and engage with fast-moving adversaries, even when fitted on high-velocity platforms.

Leveraging its expertise in creating advanced technologies like the OTO 76/62 Super Rapido and the OTO 127/64 LW Vulcano, Leonardo has engineered its new defense systems to meet marketplace demands, which are increasingly leaning towards compact and stealth technologies, including for uncrewed platforms. Simultaneously, the enterprise continues to enhance product reliability, streamline maintenance intervals, and boost competitiveness.

The selection of LIONFISH® underscores the strategic partnership between Leonardo and the Royal Netherlands Navy, which has also recently selected Leonardo’s OTO 127/64 LW Vulcano systems for its four De Zeven Provinciën class multi-role vessels.
