In alignment with the execution of the contract granted by the French Defence Procurement Agency in April 2017, Naval Group commenced its search for the program’s industrial vendors for the five future intermediate-size frigates, with the initial unit set to be handed over to the French Navy in 2023.
Procurement constitutes a substantial part of the total value of a warship; it is crucial for Naval Group, as the systems engineering leader and integrator, to identify the most efficient suppliers and subcontractors, forming strategic collaborations with them.
Frédéric Massa, Director of Naval Group Purchasing: states, “We have significant expectations from our suppliers. Their innovative and competitive proposals will aid in achieving technological dominance in operational theaters. The prosperity of the program relies on their fulfillment of obligations: on-time delivery of input data and hardware for which they are accountable, adhering to the anticipated quality standards. We selected them based on their ability to contribute to this pivotal program for France.”
Currently, the key vendors chosen include:
Axima, specializing in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems;
CNIM, responsible for sonar hatches and torpedo chambers;
Ixblue for navigation devices and their computing systems;
Leonardo for 76 mm medium caliber gun systems;
MBDA for integration and services associated with missile-launch installations;
MTU, recognized as one of the top manufacturers of large diesel engines globally;
Safran Electronics & Defense for the optronic identification system featuring the extensive range of the PASEO XLR (eXtra Long Range) sight;
Thales, delivering the sonar suite, electronic warfare suite, IFF (Identification, Friend or Foe), and communication systems.
The French iteration of the Belh@rra, a state-of-the-art frigate with an approximate weight of 4,000 tonnes designed for anti-submarine operations, aims to address various French national requirements. It will be equipped with advanced self-defense capabilities and special forces deployment features. Additionally, it will integrate the new Thales SEA FIRE four flat antenna radar and will be fitted with adaptable launch systems for Aster 30 and Exocet missiles from MBDA.
