Introducing the Latest Evolution: Meet the Launch Client for the Leonardo A244/S Lightweight Torpedo!
The Leonardo consortium has further advanced its renowned and effective A244/S lightweight torpedoes (LWT) by launching a new variant and securing its inaugural client. Detailed information concerning the international client has not been released, leaving its status as either a new or existing customer undisclosed.
Leveraging the integration of cutting-edge technologies in propulsion and platform management, drawn from the insights gained through its array of LWT and Heavyweight Torpedo (HWT) initiatives, Leonardo has created an upgraded variant of the A244/S LWT referred to as Mod 4. This version serves as a brand-new production weapon system or an enhancement package for operational torpedoes, extending their service life and capabilities while reducing overall life-cycle expenses. Deployed with over 16 naval forces globally, including India, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, UAE, Chile, and Colombia, the current Mod 3 variant is adept at engaging contemporary conventional and nuclear submarines.
Designed for seamless launching from any surface vessel and rotary-wing aircraft, the Mod 3 features a sophisticated digital signal processing unit, which can identify and monitor multiple threats concurrently, enabling a clear distinction between real threats and countermeasures, according to Leonardo. With remarkably low emitted noise attributed to its electric motor, the A244/S Mod 3 achieves its maximum speed regardless of operational depth.
