The U.S. Navy, in collaboration with the Missile Defense Agency and supported by Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT), successfully executed a series of Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) evaluations in the Atlantic Ocean during Formidable Shield 2017 (FS-17) from September 24 – October 17, 2017. Naval forces from eight allied NATO countries participated in this significant exercise.
Formidable Shield aims to showcase and enhance allied cooperation in a unified air and missile defense framework, utilizing NATO command-and-control protocols and data link system.
In one notable instance, a U.S. Navy vessel utilizing the BMD 4.0.3 Aegis Combat System executed a simulated SM-3 Blk IB TU engagement against a live short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) target, with remote track data provided by a Spanish F-100 class ship. Concurrently, another U.S. Navy ship, operating with the Baseline 9.C1 integrated air and missile defense capability, launched SM-2 missiles at cruise missile targets while simultaneously monitoring the SRBM.
In a separate event, a U.S. Navy vessel equipped with the BMD 4.0.3 Aegis Combat System successfully neutralized a medium-range ballistic missile target using an SM-3 Blk IB TU.
“These tests illustrate the adaptability and efficacy of the Aegis Combat System in collaboration with various international navies,” stated Jim Sheridan, vice president of Lockheed Martin’s Naval Combat & Missile Defense Systems. “Collaborating with our partner nations and the U.S. Navy highlights the interoperability of the Aegis Combat System with different systems in a cohesive air and missile defense framework.”
As a recognized global leader in system integration and the advancement of air and missile defense systems and technologies, Lockheed Martin offers high-caliber missile defense solutions that safeguard civilians, vital assets, and deployed personnel against contemporary and anticipated threats.
