BAE Revolutionizes F-35 Production with Significant Milestone Achievements
The vehicle management computer and active inceptor system are essential flight systems that equip every F-35 jet with the capability to function securely and dependably in challenging environments.
BAE Systems has recently accomplished the delivery of its 3,000th vehicle management computer (VMC) and 1,000th active inceptor system (AIS) to Lockheed Martin for the F-35 Lightning II aircraft, marking two significant production achievements for the platform. The VMC and AIS are critical flight systems that enable each F-35 jet to operate securely and dependably in demanding conditions, resulting in reduced pilot workload and improved mission effectiveness.
“At BAE Systems, our commitment lies in equipping our warfighters with the most sophisticated systems and technologies,” stated Ehtisham Siddiqui, vice president and general manager of Controls and Avionics Solutions at BAE Systems. “These two milestones highlight our collaboration with Lockheed Martin to consistently provide proven flight-critical and mission-essential systems on schedule for the F-35 aircraft.”
The VMC unit delivers cutting-edge hardware and computing capabilities for the F-35’s digital fly-by-wire flight control system and utility systems (fuel, electrical, and hydraulic system controls), optimizing system integration to enhance mission effectiveness and safety. BAE Systems has achieved full-rate production – boosting deliveries from 10 shipsets per month to 25 shipsets per month to meet program demands.
BAE Systems has also attained full-rate production of 19 shipsets per month for its active inceptors, which pilots utilize to navigate and maneuver the aircraft. The AIS comprises the inceptor control unit, active side stick controller, and active quadrant throttle assembly. These high-integrity inceptors provide pilots with tactical insights through active technology for heightened situational awareness, safety, and mission survivability.
The company persistently invests in equipment, testing, and infrastructure enhancements to ensure top-tier manufacturing efficiency and aftermarket support. These advancements resulted in a perfect quality rating in both VMC and AIS production for 2020 from Lockheed Martin. Work related to the VMC and AIS takes place at BAE Systems facilities in Endicott, New York, and Rochester, UK, respectively.
BAE Systems stands as a prominent global collaborator with Lockheed Martin on the F-35 initiative. The company also supplies the electronic warfare system for the platform, delivering a cumulative total of 830 systems to date from its Nashua, N.H., facility. Beyond providing mission-critical electronic warfare systems, BAE Systems manufactures the aft fuselage for each jet at its facilities in Lancashire, UK, and Adelaide, Australia, and offers sustainability, technical support, and training to maintain the global fleet of F-35s mission-ready.
