Surge of Young Talent Enters Training at UK’s Leading Defence Firm

With BAE Systems announcing the commencement of applications for its 2026 apprenticeship program, the company has achieved a remarkable milestone with over 6,800 young individuals engaged in training across its UK operations. This impressive figure consists of approximately 5,100 apprentices and 1,700 graduates, emphasizing the firm’s dedication to nurturing the forthcoming generation of British talent.

Since 2020, BAE Systems has welcomed over 10,000 apprentices and graduates, investing more than £1 billion in education and skill enhancement, thereby fortifying the nation’s industrial skill set while fostering local and national economic advancement.

In 2026, BAE Systems anticipates recruiting over 1,100 apprentices in the UK, predominantly in the Northern region, alongside various opportunities located in the South of England, Scotland, and Wales.

The organization is also poised to employ nearly 1,200 graduates and undergraduates, providing roles in some of the globe’s most sophisticated defence and security initiatives. These highly talented individuals will engage in projects of significant international relevance, including the Global Combat Air Programme, the UK’s next-generation SSN-AUKUS submarines, and Type-26 frigates, in addition to pioneering technologies such as cyber, space, and drone capabilities.

BAE Systems’ investment has facilitated the establishment of three multi-million-pound skills academies in Barrow, Glasgow, and Samlesbury in recent years, which enhance the capabilities of thousands of employees annually to sustain the advanced STEM capabilities vital to the UK’s sovereign defence.

The company also maintains a variety of partnerships with colleges, universities, and social mobility advocates, including the Movement to Work charity.

Cheyenne, 29, a third-year Steelwork Apprentice at BAE Systems’ Submarines division, commented:

With over 60 programmes available within the company across the UK, there are opportunities at every level, ranging from steelwork and engineering to cyber security, software development, finance, and project management.

Applications for the company’s 2026 apprenticeship intake are currently open. This opportunity will close once a sufficient volume of applications is received, no later than the end of February 2026.
