Australia’s RAAF F-35A Achieves Key Operational Milestone

Australia’s Defence Minister, Senator the Hon. Linda Reynolds, CSC, alongside Defence Industry Minister Melissa Price MP, has officially announced the Initial Operational Capability (IOC) for Australia’s F-35A fleet. This milestone positions Australia as the seventh nation to achieve IOC for its advanced F-35 fighters, enhancing the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) strategic prowess in safeguarding national interests.

“The IOC marks the dawn of a transformative era for Australian air power, equipping the RAAF with groundbreaking capabilities,” stated Joe North, the CEO of Lockheed Martin Australia. He extended his congratulations to the RAAF for reaching this significant achievement, reaffirming Lockheed Martin’s commitment as the Original Equipment Manufacturer in supporting the F-35A fleet alongside industry partners.

Bill Brotherton, acting F-35 Vice President and General Manager, praised the dedicated efforts of the collaborative government and industry team that made this milestone possible. “This team is devoted to providing the most effective, survivable, and connected fighter globally, ensuring sovereign protection for Australia and reinforcing the future of the F-35 coalition,” Brotherton mentioned.

The F-35, renowned as the most sophisticated fighter jet ever produced, is pivotal in transforming the capabilities of the Australian Defence Force. Its cutting-edge sensors and low observable technology allow it to operate effectively in contested airspace, while integrating operational data for air, land, and sea forces. Coupled with advanced weaponry and an extensive operational range, the F-35 delivers unmatched combat capabilities.

Furthermore, the F-35 program is a key driver in developing a resilient Australian defence industry. Each aircraft contains Australian-made components, benefiting over 50 local companies with contracts exceeding $2.7 billion AUD ($2 billion). This initiative has generated more than 2,400 high-tech manufacturing jobs within the Australian industry.

On a global scale, over 600 F-35 aircraft are deployed across 26 bases and naval vessels. The F-35 is integral to contemporary global security, with over 1,200 trained pilots and 10,000 maintainers qualified to operate this aircraft. Nine nations have now integrated F-35s into their military operations.

Currently, Australia boasts a fleet of 33 F-35As, with RAAF crews amassing over 8,780 flight hours, supported by more than 45 pilots and 600 maintainers actively contributing to the fleet’s operational readiness.
