Kongsberg and Lockheed Martin Forge Alliance for Advanced Norwegian Air Surveillance Radar System

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) alongside Lockheed Martin has formalized an agreement for KONGSBERG’s assistance in the provision of the TPY-4 radar to Norway as part of the Norwegian Radar Sensor (NORSE) Initiative.

With this approximately 900 MNOK agreement, KONGSBERG will serve as a vital ally and subcontractor to Lockheed Martin, contributing to the NORSE initiative. KONGSBERG’s responsibilities encompass hardware, software, as well as the final assembly and testing of the TPY-4 radar systems prior to their installation at designated radar locations.

“This agreement with Lockheed Martin demonstrates the significance of forging strong and reliable partnerships to meet both national and international client needs. Together, we will provide cutting-edge radar technology for the Norwegian Armed Forces. This agreement is crucial not only for KONGSBERG but also for our subcontractors in Norway,” states Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.

TPY-4 is a globally available, mobile, multi-mission radar capable of functioning in contested RF environments. Fully digital across all components, TPY-4 incorporates the latest advanced commercial technologies to establish an innovative radar architecture. It offers the flexibility to optimize performance based on specific missions, threats, and environments, while also ensuring easy adaptation to emerging advanced threats.

“The TPY-4 presents a low-risk proposition for the Norwegian Ministry of Defence, particularly as the radar is already in production ahead of the program selection. We are thankful to be chosen to contribute to the protection of Norwegian citizens,” expressed Rick Herodes, Program Management Director of Ground-Based Air Surveillance Radars at Lockheed Martin. “Norway becomes the first NATO ally of the U.S. Air Force for this radar product, and we eagerly anticipate further international collaborations in the near future.”

“This agreement allows us to leverage current, existing technology, solidifying a robust foundation for this new capability in Norway. Investments like this also open avenues for technological advancements in both existing and emerging fields. We are excited to collaborate with our partner Lockheed Martin, capitalizing on each other’s strengths to deliver solutions that address future requirements,” remarks Kjetil Reiten Myhra, EVP Integrated Defence Systems.

In 2018, Lockheed Martin and KONGSBERG entered into a Teaming Agreement for collaboration on the provision of TPY-4 radars to global clientele.
