LM Celebrates Milestone Launch of Revolutionary Interceptor Flight Software

Lockheed Martin has recently provided the inaugural flight software package for the nation’s upcoming intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) interceptor ahead of the planned timeline.

Lockheed Martin’s Next Generation Interceptor (NGI) initiative achieved its first official software rollout in August 2022. This delivery of the initial incremental flight software to the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) signifies a pivotal milestone on the journey towards flight assessment and operational deployment.

“Our engineering team delivered this powerful capability to our client over a month ahead of schedule using Lockheed Martin’s NGI Software Factory,” stated Sarah Reeves, vice president of NGI at Lockheed Martin. “The software factory boosts dependability and enables swifter development cycles in the future.”

This software is vital for NGI to fulfill its mission: to shield the U.S. homeland against growing and evolving ICBM threats. The team employed open architectures and nimble processes, utilizing development, security, and operations (DevSecOps) to reach this milestone ahead of schedule through our NGI Software Factory.

This initial software delivery illustrates that the company’s NGI Software Factory is operational and producing code. The software factory encompasses a structure comprising software development tools, process workflows, scripts, and environments. It guarantees high reliability through continuous automated testing.

After this initial official software release – categorized as Minimum Viable Product (MVP) – the Lockheed Martin NGI team will next concentrate on utilizing its software factory to generate more code. Enhanced capabilities will be integrated in subsequent software releases as the team innovates with urgency to support the military personnel safeguarding our homeland.

To further its efforts on NGI, Lockheed Martin has recently commenced construction on the Missile System Integration Lab in Huntsville, Alabama. This new facility will initially be dedicated exclusively to development within the NGI initiative. The company also has exciting career opportunities available that support NGI.
