Lockheed Martin Secures $350 Million to Enhance F-35 Fighter with Cutting-Edge Helmet Display Technology

Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co., situated in Fort Worth, Texas, has received a contract adjustment amounting to $347,435,068 from the US Department of Defense. This contract adjustment pertains to the procurement of helmet-mounted display systems for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter jet.

The helmet-mounted display system (HMDS) amalgamates a binocular interface and elevates pilot situational awareness. It integrates digital night vision capabilities and enables pilots to visually identify targets for weaponry engagement. Additionally, the HMDS is coordinated with the distributed aperture system (DAS) to deliver a clear perspective of the aircraft’s environment.

The HMDS has amassed considerable operational hours and is presently undergoing enhancements to incorporate organic light emitting diode (OLED) technology. These upgrades are intended to bolster visual clarity, particularly in low-light scenarios. The incorporation of OLED technology is projected to be finalized by 2022.

Beyond the OLED technology integration, prospective advancements for the HMDS are also being pursued. These advancements encompass improvements in night vision, a weight reduction strategy, and the inclusion of a photochromic visor.

The procurement of the helmet-mounted display systems will support the Air Force, Marine Corps, Navy, F-35 Cooperative Program Partners, and international defense sales. This initiative is overseen by the Naval Air Systems Command located in Patuxent River, Maryland, and is anticipated to reach completion by December 2026.
