Airbus Launches Enhanced Training Program for German Eurofighter Aviators
Airbus Secures Contracts to Enhance Eurofighter PSTS Training
In a significant development for military aviation, Airbus has been appointed as the lead contractor within the industrial Pilot Synthetic Training System (PSTS) consortium. This initiative encompasses two pivotal contracts aimed at upgrading the Eurofighter PSTS at the Main Operating Base (MOB) in Laage and introducing cutting-edge simulator cockpits across all Eurofighter MOBs throughout Germany.
Upgrading Training Capabilities
The first contract involves the enhancement of existing Full Mission Simulators (FMS) and Cockpit Trainers (CT) at Laage, along with the addition of two extra FMS to meet modern standards. This upgrade will expand the training capabilities from two to four simulators, facilitating the German Air Force in conducting four-ship training at a single site and enabling multi-ship training across networked locations. The innovative design of the Visual Display Systems ensures that the four FMS can be accommodated in the existing simulator halls without requiring extensive infrastructure modifications.
Comprehensive Cockpit Replacement
The second contract focuses on the replacement of ten cockpits within the FMS and CT at all German Eurofighter bases, including Neuburg, Laage, Wittmund, Nörvenich, and the Central Integration Facility at Airbus Manching.
Modern Cockpit Features
The integration of advanced cockpit replicas within the PSTS marks a significant renewal of a crucial sub-system across all Eurofighter simulators. This upgrade will ensure that pilots experience optimal working conditions for the next decade. All PSTS cockpits at the German MOBs will include a complete array of cockpit displays and control panels, featuring a newly designed facsimile head-up display. Additional enhancements will comprise a G-seat motion cueing system, an anti-G inflation system, and a breathing air system, all governed by a sophisticated cockpit linkage system crafted by Airbus. Importantly, the entire cockpit setup will be compatible with night vision goggles.
Advanced Simulation Technology
The FMS will boast a state-of-the-art LED projection system that offers a high-resolution out-the-window view for pilots, regardless of the time, day, or weather conditions during training scenarios. Furthermore, implementing a standardized concept for computer racks, power supplies, and emergency equipment across all devices paves the way for future enhancement of the remaining German MOBs.
Collaboration and Innovation
The PSTS consortium is a result of a collaborative agreement between the German and Spanish Ministries of Defence, comprising three partners: Airbus Defence and Space, Indra, and CAE, with Airbus as the primary contractor. The evolution of the PSTS is closely tied to the enhancements in the Eurofighter’s capabilities and performance, particularly regarding electronic defense systems, modern avionics, and the new CAPTOR-E radar.
