CAMBRIDGE, United Kingdom, August 16, 2016 – Cambridge Pixel (www.cambridgepixel.com) has been chosen by Lockheed Martin Integrated Systems UK to deliver software modules for radar scan transformation, target monitoring, and radar integration for the deployment into the company’s cutting-edge Naval Vigilance Radar system.

This maritime navigation radar system – in conjunction with Kelvin Hughes solid-state SharpEye radar transceivers – will be installed on over 60 Royal Navy Platforms throughout the coming five years. The new equipment is a component of the Navigation Radar Programme (NRP), a £44m Royal Navy Enhancement awarded to Lockheed Martin by the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) in January 2016.

David Johnson, CEO of Cambridge Pixel, stated, “We are excited to collaborate with Lockheed Martin’s engineers on this significant enhancement of navigation radars for the UK Royal Navy’s fleet of vessels. Our software modules align perfectly with Lockheed Martin’s vision of creating a navigation radar system that addresses the Royal Navy’s current requirements while offering a clear pathway for future enhancements.”

Speaking on behalf of Lockheed Martin, a representative remarked: “We chose Cambridge Pixel due to their exceptional background and expertise in all facets of radar processing and visualization – particularly in target monitoring. Their engineering team is already well-acquainted with the Kelvin Hughes SharpEye radar transceiver – which provided a significant advantage for this contract – and they have consistently exhibited a strong desire to collaborate with our team, engineer to engineer, to support us throughout the integration process.”

Cambridge Pixel’s software ‘modules of expertise’ will be incorporated into Lockheed Martin’s Naval Vigilance Radar system. The radar scan transformation module receives radar information from the Kelvin Hughes SharpEye radar and generates a radar image for display alongside underlay and overlay graphics.

The radar monitoring module processes the radar information to automatically detect and track targets, while the radar fusion software amalgamates tracks from multiple radars on the vessels with AIS (automatic identification system) transponder information and other sensor data into a unified, integrated data source.

To aid Lockheed Martin during the development and testing stages of the new navigation radar system, Cambridge Pixel is additionally supplying radar simulation and recording functionalities from its established SPx product family. The RDR Radar Data Recorder captures raw video from the sensor as ASTERIX CAT-240, alongside AIS information and navigation data.

For system evaluation, prior to connection to the SharpEye radars, the SPx Radar Simulator generates authentic ASTERIX-based data sets including primary radar video, tracks, NMEA-0183 navigation data, and AIS data sets derived from programmed scenarios.

Cambridge Pixel’s technology is utilized in naval, air traffic control, vessel traffic management, commercial shipping, security, surveillance, and airborne radar solutions. Their systems have been deployed in mission-critical applications with renowned companies such as BAE Systems, Frontier Electronic Systems, Barco Defense, Blighter Surveillance Systems, DRS, Exelis, Kelvin Hughes, Lockheed Martin, Navantia, Navtech Radar, Raytheon, Royal Thai Air Force, Samsung Thales, Sofresud, and Tellumat.
