Lockheed Martin Enhances Command & Control for U.S. Missile Defense Shield

Today’s operational environment is the most competitive since the Cold War. Advanced offensive missile systems from uncooperative nations present a rising risk to the United States. Assisting the U.S. in mitigating these risks is the Command, Control, Battle Management & Communications (C2BMC) system, the central component of the U.S. Missile Defense Framework.

To enhance C2BMC’s functionality, the Missile Defense Agency granted Lockheed Martin a $157 million agreement to strengthen C2BMC’s engagement support capacity for the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system, which shields the U.S. from intercontinental ballistic missile threats. The GMD system comprises silo-deployed interceptors, connections to surveillance sensors on land and sea, along with distributed fire control and launch assistance systems.

At present, the GMD system confronts threats using the most reliable single-source information from various radars. The forthcoming enhancement to C2BMC, dubbed Spiral 8.2-7, will equip GMD with a single, real-time, aggregated view of threat system trajectories by correlating and merging data from a wider array of sensors, including satellites and both ground- and ship-mounted radars. Once this spiral upgrade is finalized, the GMD will have access to the same operational environment overview currently utilized by combat commanders. Furthermore, Spiral 8.2-7 will empower C2BMC to relay hypersonic threat information onto the Link 16 military tactical data link network and display it for operators.

“C2BMC is a cutting-edge battle management platform, equipped with a global infrastructure that supports a diverse array of missions. As our clients seek advancements to promote joint all-domain operations, C2BMC serves as a vital resource,” stated Mark Johnson, Director of Missile Defense Solutions at Lockheed Martin.

Established in 2004, C2BMC stands as one of the initial operationally deployed Multi-Domain Systems, integrating technologies and sensors functioning across space, land, and maritime domains. This network operates constantly, 24/7, to facilitate real-world operations at over 30 locations globally, including U.S. Strategic, Northern, European, Indo-Pacific, Space, and Central Commands.

With its headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland, Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) is an international security and aerospace enterprise employing roughly 114,000 individuals worldwide. The company is predominantly involved in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration, and sustainment of cutting-edge technological systems, products, and services.
