MBDA and Lockheed Martin Join Forces with Fresh Proposal for Germany’s Comprehensive Air & Missile Defense Initiative

MBDA Deutschland and Lockheed Martin (LM) have put forth an updated proposal to the German Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) as part of their TLVS bidders consortium. This proposal outlines the development, testing, certification, and delivery of Germany’s future Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) system.

“The TLVS program will be supported by over 80 subcontractors, employing more than 6,000 highly skilled workers at peak performance, primarily located in Germany. This initiative will leverage a wide range of industrial capabilities, including system engineering, cybersecurity, digitization, and advanced radar and electrical engineering, involving small and medium-sized suppliers. With these strengths, the TLVS program aims to provide robust defense against current and future air and missile threats,” stated Thomas Gottschild, Managing Director of MBDA Deutschland.

“In recent months, we have made significant strides in refining the Integrated Master Schedule, establishing relevant specifications, and conducting performance simulations to reduce risks associated with the future contract,” he added.

Given current threats, a mobile IAMD system with full 360-degree capabilities and based on an open network-centric architecture is essential. The TLVS system uniquely possesses these capabilities, allowing rapid adaptation to dynamic threat environments.

“The TLVS Joint Venture between MBDA Deutschland and Lockheed Martin is dedicated to supporting Germany’s critical security interests, building upon our strong legacy of collaboration with Germany to create jobs, share technical expertise, and deliver advanced capabilities that benefit both continents,” said Scott Arnold, Vice President of Integrated Air and Missile Defense at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control.

“TLVS represents a proven, modern solution that can significantly enhance Germany’s defense capabilities, positioning Germany as a NATO Framework Nation for Air and Missile Defense,” Arnold continued.

The TLVS proposal, designed to replace Germany’s outdated sectored Patriot systems from the late 1960s, offers protection against a wider array of threats. It incorporates two mission-specific effectors, enhanced sensor capabilities for long-range engagements, and an innovative communications and Battle Management system to boost interoperability, data fusion, and cyber resilience. TLVS is set to revolutionize Germany’s defense strategy and serve as a model for neighboring nations in addressing ongoing global security challenges.

With a strong presence in five European countries and the USA, MBDA achieved a revenue of €3.7 billion in 2019 and possesses an order book worth €17.5 billion. As a world leader in missiles and missile systems, MBDA serves over 90 armed forces customers globally.
