Safran Electronics & Defense Australasia Pty Ltd has recently secured subcontracts with two Australian firms as a component of its dedication to Australian Industry Capability. Acacia Research and Thomas Global Systems will develop elements of essential subsystems for Australia’s Future Submarine Program. In 2019, Safran Electronics & Defense Australasia was engaged by Lockheed Martin Australia Pty Ltd, the combat system integrator for the Future Submarine, to create the search and attack optronic masts, navigation radar, and navigation data distribution for the Attack Class Submarines.

Safran Electronics & Defense Australasia’s CEO, Alexis de Pelleport, commented, “The subcontracts with Acacia Research and Thomas Global Systems will enable us to fulfill our mutual objective of effectively transferring the design of crucial submarine technology to Australia, thereby promoting local employment. These contracts illustrate Safran’s trust in Australian businesses to enhance Australia’s sovereign capacities. They capitalize on the expertise of two firms that have been supporting the Australian Defence Force for numerous years.”

The scope of the contract will have Acacia Research providing prototypes and interface simulators, allowing Lockheed Martin Australia to perform testing activities and validate the integrated performance of the combat system in its Adelaide-based Combat System Architecture Laboratory (CSAL). Thomas Global will undertake the design of processing hardware for the optronics masts, navigation radar, and navigation data distribution systems.

Ted Huber, Acacia Research Chairman and Founder, stated regarding the contract, “Acacia has been engaged in the development of advanced submarine tactical systems and applications for over twenty years. We have supported the Oberon and Collins Class submarines throughout the years and are excited to lend this expertise to deliver top-tier capability for the Attack Class.”

Thomas Global Systems’ CEO, Angus Hutchinson, remarked, “We are thrilled to be chosen by Safran as a principal contributor to this significant program and eagerly anticipate collaborating during the design phase of the project. The design work is a vital component in cultivating sovereign capability for Australia’s Future Submarine Program, and we value Safran’s commitment to partnering with competitive Australian firms. This contract demonstrates Safran’s dedication to achieving genuine sovereignty for our local defense industry. We look forward to advancing our relationship with Safran on this and other initiatives.”
