BAE Systems Lands Major Contract to Reinvent Sweden’s CV90 Armored Warriors

The Swedish administration has awarded BAE Systems a contract on March 30th to refurbish 262 Combat Vehicles 90 (CV90) for the Swedish Armed Forces.

The organization’s responsibilities will include restoring the chassis and enhancing the durability of the vehicles along with their turrets, while also boosting the efficiency of the combat systems. Collectively, these efforts will help extend the lifespan of the vehicles, thus strengthening Army capabilities.

“This is a highly important initiative for BAE Systems and the Swedish Armed Forces,” asserted Lena Gillström, managing director of BAE Systems Weapons Systems in Karlskoga, the facility responsible for turret production. “With this upgrade and the integration of the new Battlefield Management System, these vehicles will transition into the realm of digital defense, reinforcing the Army’s capacity to tackle future challenges.”

BAE Systems intends to work closely with the client throughout the entire program. The project begins immediately, with deliveries slated to commence in 2018 and continue until 2020.

“For the Swedish Armed Forces, CV90 has proven its value and capability throughout the years,” noted Tommy Gustafsson-Rask, president of BAE Systems Hägglunds AB in Örnsköldsvik. “CV90 is already operational in seven countries, and now, with this refurbishment project, we will further enhance the CV90’s significance in Sweden’s defense.”

CV90 represents a series of Swedish tracked combat vehicles developed by FMV, BAE Systems Hägglunds, and BAE Systems Weapons Systems, with over 4 million engineering hours dedicated to the evolution of this advanced Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV). The Swedish variant of the IFV is equipped with a turret featuring a 40 mm autocannon.

The Swedish Armed Forces operate a fleet of 509 CV90s. Other countries currently utilizing this vehicle include Norway, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.

The contract was awarded to HB Utveckling AB, a collaboration between BAE Systems Bofors AB, which is part of BAE Systems Weapons Systems, and BAE Systems Hägglunds AB.
