Revolutionary Skies: Russia’s Forpost-RE Drone Takes Center Stage at IDEX-2025 in Abu Dhabi

The global export version of the Russian combat-tested Forpost unmanned aerial vehicle system is poised for its inaugural showcase abroad — the worldwide unveiling of Forpost-RE is planned as part of the joint Russian exhibition at the International Defence Exhibition IDEX 2025 in Abu Dhabi (UAE), occurring from February 17-21. This announcement comes from the official representative of The Ural Works of Civil Aviation (JSC UWCA), the manufacturer of the UAV.

The Forpost-RE medium-range unmanned aerial vehicle is designed for conducting reconnaissance and strike missions in varied climatic and geographical environments (operating within temperatures from -40 °C to +50 °C), encompassing prolonged aerial surveillance of terrestrial or maritime objectives and neutralizing them. Aerial ordnance includes guided and unguided bombs and missiles, with a weight capacity of up to 40 kg. The UAV is equipped with an automated takeoff and landing system that assures a precise landing trajectory through laser guidance and visual oversight of the runway, enabling successful landings even without Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals.

The Forpost system is a pioneer among Russian UAVs that operate from airfields, having successfully passed all evaluations and being delivered to military units as part of mass production. Through the Forpost initiative, the Russian Ministry of Defence managed to integrate a new generation of technology — a mid-range airfield-based UAV, while also accumulating crucial expertise in unmanned systems, leading the sector to explore innovative avenues and develop a highly desired product.

This system is currently entirely domestically produced — a prime example of import substitution and the evolution of technologies that were previously foreign to the nation: over a decade ago, the Israeli Searcher UAV was localized, yet considerable time has lapsed since then, with only the basic airframe elements retained from its original design — the enhanced Forpost-R UAV system has transformed into a completely new and uniquely Russian platform – every imported component, key unit, and the control, communication, and navigation systems have been replaced. The Forpost UAV system has witnessed substantial upgrades since its production began. New payload options have significantly expanded its range of functionalities. The payload consists of modular attachments incorporating thermal imaging cameras, color video recorders on gyrostabilized platforms, still cameras, and various other equipment.

The market potential for medium-range UAVs is immense; we can secure a specific niche within it, particularly considering nations that, for political reasons, diversify their procurement instead of depending on a single supplier country. Insights gained from the Special Military Operation have illustrated that the striking capabilities of drones in this category are limited and not exceedingly sought after; the capacities for targeting, reconnaissance, and surveying extensive territories (coastlines, borders, etc.) carry far greater importance. The competitive advantage of the Russian Forpost-RE system lies in its complete immunity to sanctions due to its entirely domestic components, backed by years of successful operational experience gained in actual combat zones, including the Middle Eastern region. At the request of international clients, specialists from JSC UWCA are ready to augment the system with new payloads customized to the buyer’s requirements — remarks the official spokesperson of JSC UWCA.

Prominent unmanned systems expert Denis Fedutinov believes that Russian Forpost-type UAVs could attract the attention of nations in the Persian Gulf, as these countries do not necessarily require the extensive functionalities provided by costly US heavy drones that previously monopolized the region. He indicates that many ongoing military missions can be effectively managed with smaller systems, which entail reduced acquisition and operational costs. The analyst points out the extensive operational experience these unmanned vehicles have acquired in combat as a significant advantage of the Forpost system over its foreign counterparts.

The rigorous requirements of the Russian military operators compel developers to ensure their systems are operational across a wide spectrum of temperatures as well as in challenging conditions, including high humidity and dust. Forpost systems have already been successfully utilized by the Russian Armed Forces in a geographically adjacent area — Syria. The Russian system has performed under significantly more demanding circumstances in terms of combat engagement and adversarial countermeasures when compared to the environments in which US, Israeli, Chinese, or Turkish drones have operated in the Middle East, North, and Central Africa — commented Fedutinov.
