Aegis Combat System Triumph: Enhancing Japan’s Naval Defense Capabilities
JS ATAGO (DDG-177) Enhances Ballistic Missile Defense Capabilities
In a significant advancement, the JS ATAGO, operated by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force with the support of the U.S. Navy, Missile Defense Agency, and Lockheed Martin, successfully conducted a test of its upgraded Aegis Combat System, showcasing its Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) capabilities for the first time.
The Flight Test Mission-05, held on September 11, highlighted the ship’s ability to engage a simple separating target organically. This operation marks a crucial milestone for the JS ATAGO, positioning it as the most advanced warship in the Japanese fleet post-modernization.
Equipped with the Aegis Weapon System, the JS ATAGO integrates BMD within an upgraded Integrated Air and Missile Defense framework, employing commercial-off-the-shelf technologies and open architecture innovations like the Aegis Common Source Library (CSL).
The JS ATAGO stands out as the first international vessel to leverage the CSL, which enhances fleet interoperability while reducing development, training, and maintenance costs. This modernization also enables improved flexibility in crew assignments.
Mary Keifer, director of Lockheed Martin’s Aegis International programs, Integrated Warfare Systems, and Sensors, remarked, “I commend the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force for their commitment to affordability and innovation. This baseline modernization effort has streamlined their lifetime support costs and significantly advanced their BMD capabilities.”
This successful BMD test is a product of extensive joint research investments by the United States and Japan. As part of the ongoing evolution of naval defense technology, Lockheed Martin is also developing a Baseline 9 variant computer program aimed for integration into Japan’s newest Aegis destroyers.
