The defense and security firm Saab has secured an ammunition contract from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) for the Carl-Gustaf man-portable weapon system, recognized in the U.S. as M3 MAAWS (Multi-role, Anti-armor Anti-personnel Weapon System). The contract value is USD 5.4 million (MSEK 46).
This contract falls under the framework arrangement declared with the DoD in August 2014 for the 84-mm recoilless rifle system.
“The Carl-Gustaf, featuring its extensive range of munition types, has consistently proven itself in the most challenging environments, making it a versatile and effective asset for soldiers. This contract underscores the strong confidence from the client in the system,” states Michael Andersson, President and CEO, Saab Area North America.
The Carl-Gustaf stands as a premier weapon system in the support weapon category. It has undergone regular modernization to adapt to the evolving needs of users. The latest variant, the Carl-Gustaf M4 (designated M3E1 in the U.S.), reduces its weight from 10 kg to below 7 kg. Carl-Gustaf is a combat-effective system for soldiers operating in rigorous conditions. Utilizing a diverse array of ammunition types, the Carl-Gustaf system enables dismounted troops to tackle various challenges – from neutralizing armored threats to clearing obstacles and confronting enemies in urban settings.
