On April 28 during a ceremony in Hobart Tasmania, the Australian Government inked a contract with DMS Maritime, a fully owned branch of Serco, for the procurement, operation, and upkeep of an Antarctic Supply Research Vessel (ASRV) equipped with ice-breaking capabilities. The ship will be constructed by Damen Shipyards Group and will play a crucial role in the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) program in the upcoming years. The event was graced by Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Julia Bishop, and Minister for the Environment, Greg Hunt.
Regarding the selection of Damen for the design and construction of the vessel, Serco CEO Asia Pacific Mark Irwin stated, “Damen is a prominent international shipbuilding group with a strong global footprint. In addition to building a diverse range of standardized ships in series, Damen has developed various custom vessels, including scientific, hydrographic, naval, and ice-breaking ships. Damen and Serco share a robust partnership, and over the last decade, Damen has delivered more than 40 vessels utilized by Serco to bolster naval operations in the UK and Australia.”
The realization of this vessel will leverage the expertise of multiple companies within the Damen Shipyards Group and Damen’s extensive network. KNUD E. HANSEN from Denmark executed the concept and bid designs, while engineering and project oversight will be provided by Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (DSNS) in Vlissingen, Netherlands. The assembly and outfitting of the vessel will occur at Damen Shipyards Galati, Romania.
Damen Sales Director Asia Pacific Roland Briene remarked, “Utilizing the diverse skill sets across our organization, we can interlink every element to achieve a cohesive, comprehensive project execution. An ice-breaking research and supply vessel such as this represents a novel market entry for Damen, and we are thrilled to collaborate with AAD and DMS on this groundbreaking project.”
The ASRV embodies a cutting-edge solution, designed to support Australia’s broader exploration of the Southern Ocean and Antarctica. The vessel will measure 156 meters in length, with a beam of 25.6 meters. She will possess the capability to break ice up to 1.65 meters thick at speeds of 3 knots and will furnish Australia’s permanent research stations in Antarctica and Macquarie Island with cargo, equipment, and personnel. Featuring 500 m2 of onboard laboratory and office spaces, the vessel will also facilitate research activities. The ASRV will accommodate up to 32 DMS Maritime crew members and as many as 116 AAD scientific personnel, including a doctor, in climate-controlled quarters.
The AAD program aims to enhance Australia’s scientific, strategic, environmental, and economic interests in the Southern Ocean and Antarctica. This is a premier program focused on stewardship, climate research, and the examination of both terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
Upon completion at Damen’s facility in Galati, the ASRV will proceed to DSNS in the Netherlands for handover to the client, which is scheduled for April 2020.
