Teledyne FLIR Defense Unveils Cutting-Edge MUVE R430 Drone for Advanced Radiation Detection

Teledyne FLIR Defense, a division of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:TDY), revealed today at CBRNE Convergence the introduction of its innovative MUVE™ R430 drone sensor payload designed for the remote detection and identification of radiation sources and radiological threats across numerous usage scenarios.

The MUVE™ R430 is a sophisticated radiation detection unit specifically engineered for unmanned aerial systems (UAS) to discover, locate, quantify, chart, and recognize radioactive sources from above. Utilizing the same tested technology and algorithms as Teledyne FLIR’s celebrated identiFINDER® series of radionuclide identification instruments, the R430 empowers users to swiftly locate and accurately identify radioactive sources from a safe distance.

The Teledyne FLIR SkyRanger® R70 and R80D SkyRaider™ UAS function as the initial deployment platforms for the new sensor payload. The R430 is seamlessly integrated into the drone’s Mission Control Software and presents both visual and audible notifications of radioactivity. Employing an intuitive interface, R430 operators can effortlessly produce contamination maps, investigate hazardous sources, and conduct assessments in challenging locations and environments while maintaining a secure distance. Ready for deployment in mere minutes, MUVE R430 strikes the perfect balance of size and weight, making it an adaptable platform for a variety of applications, including extensive hazmat surveys, emergency response, and ecological monitoring.

“MUVE R430 introduces the renowned expertise of our highly trusted identiFINDER product line to the aerial domain,” stated Dr. David Cullin, vice president of technology and product management at Teledyne FLIR Defense. “Utilizing a drone for remote radiation detection facilitates quicker decision-making, ensures safer conditions for both civilian and military personnel, and enhances the potential for a positive outcome for anyone at risk. The R430 offers comprehensive situational awareness that is essential in the event of a radiation occurrence – and could even avert one.”

“As an organization, we are committed to strategically investing in our entire range of intelligent sensing technologies – for handheld devices as well as manned and unmanned platforms – to provide our clients with a complete mission solution,” Cullin further emphasized.

The R430 signifies the third addition to Teledyne FLIR’s MUVE™ series of remote sensor payloads. In June, the firm launched the MUVE B330 drone payload capable of detecting lethal biological agents and other airborne biohazards. It complements the MUVE C360 multi-gas detector, which offers real-time continuous monitoring of chemical hazards and can be utilized on both Teledyne FLIR and commercial UAS systems and robots.
