Damen Interceptor 1503 FRP: A New Maritime Triumph Docks in Gibraltar

The Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo, formally inaugurated HMC Sentinel for service in British Gibraltar Territorial Waters during a ceremony at Custom House on March 2nd. The vessel was introduced by Acting Collector of Customs John Payas, followed by a blessing from Monsignor Azzopardi in the presence of the Chief Minister and HE the Governor Sir David Steel.

HMC Sentinel is a Damen Interceptor 1503 FRP, a bespoke prototype, and the first of its category, resulting from a 3-year collaborative initiative between Damen Shipyards and its client, HM Customs. Specific requirements for functionality and equipment were integrated into the design, culminating in an exceptionally swift patrol vessel.

Measuring 14.5m in total length, the Interceptor 1503 FRP can accommodate 5 crew members and 10-12 passengers. Boasting a maximum speed of 62.5 knots powered by 4 Mercury Verado 400 R outboard motors, it is regarded as the swiftest vessel in the Bay of Gibraltar. Furthermore, it stands as the largest and most advanced ship ever commissioned for service by HM Customs Gibraltar.

The vessel’s hull and superstructure are crafted from e-glass and carbon-reinforced epoxy, while the interior features Ullman Atlantic Shock absorber seats, a stretcher, and restroom and kitchen facilities to support extended shifts at sea. HMC Sentinel is equipped with cutting-edge nautical and communication technologies, including both fixed and portable searchlights, radar, and GPS systems.

Carlos Gonzalez Martin, Damen Sales Manager for Gibraltar, remarked: “This innovative vessel exemplifies an exceptional partnership between Damen and Her Majesty’s Customs in Gibraltar. The Interceptor 1503 offers a dependable, high-performing vessel while ensuring a safe and comfortable operation for the crew.”

John Payas, the Gibraltar Collector of Customs, stated: ‘I am incredibly proud to unveil HMC Sentinel, which signifies a new chapter in the advancement of HM Customs’ maritime operations regarding capability and functionality. Its high speed, enclosed cabin, and robust design provide improved protection for our officers while they perform their duties in the often unpredictable and demanding settings that characterize the British Gibraltar Territorial Waters. Furthermore, its onboard amenities enable greater comfort, allowing longer patrol durations and increased presence.’
