Damen Shipyards Cape Town Celebrates Milestone with First IPV Blessing Ceremony

On 12th February, the South African Navy (SAN) conducted a blessing ceremony for the inaugural vessel of three Multi Mission Inshore Patrol Vessels (MMIPV) at Damen Shipyards Cape Town (DSCT).

Initially, the intention was to organize an elaborate launching celebration, but in light of the circumstances surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, SAN opted for a more intimate gathering.

During the ceremony, the vessel was sanctified, and a champagne bottle was smashed against the bow, following tradition. The South African flag was hoisted on the vessel, and the crew greeted her with cheers.

Sam Montsi, Director at DSCT, remarked, “Despite the subdued nature of the event, this remains a significant milestone – the blessing of the first of these three vital vessels we are constructing in Africa for the continent. With this occurring during an ongoing global pandemic, every effort has been made to ensure the safety and health of all present today. This also applies to the daily operations on the project, with stringent safety protocols in place. Thanks to these measures, we can continue our work on the vessels and stay on schedule and within budget, which is a source of pride for us all.”

The MMIPVs will enhance South Africa’s maritime security by strengthening the nation’s capacity to respond efficiently, swiftly, and economically to menaces like illegal trafficking and fishing activities.

“Today signifies another achievement in the SA Navy’s journey. To contemplate where this first MMIPV may end up in future history is thrilling. This vessel will play a vital role in search and rescue endeavors and serve as a critical component in security operations. The ship’s reconfigurability enhances it as a force multiplier in any coastal environment for the SA Navy. What lies ahead for this ship is uncertain. However, I firmly believe that the courageous men and women who pledged to uphold the constitution and safeguard the liberties we cherish are the true champions of this narrative,” declared Chief of the SA Navy, Vice Admiral Mosiwa Hlongwane during the blessing ceremony.

The 62 x 11 meter naval ship will be the first Damen Sea Axe vessel to operate in South Africa. The Sea Axe is a patented Damen design that provides outstanding seakeeping characteristics. The straight-edged, axe-shaped bow slices through the water, reducing slamming for enhanced safety and comfort on board while significantly lowering fuel consumption and emissions.
