The Damen Shipyards Group has finalized an agreement with the Dutch and Swedish Ministries of Defence regarding a seven-year, in-service maintenance contract which encompasses a total of five vessels. All of these vessels are tugs acquired from Damen.

This contract includes comprehensive maintenance, both planned and unplanned, excluding routine operational tasks performed by the crew. Scheduled maintenance will occur as per a pre-arranged schedule mutually agreed upon by all parties involved. Both ministries will additionally have complete access to a 24/7 service desk for any additional work that may be required.

The crews might receive training from Damen for their basic maintenance duties, as well as instruction in vessel operation and navigation at the simulator training center managed by 360-Control in IJmuiden.

The contract with the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) involves three Damen ASD 2810 Hybrid tugs. Two of these, the Noordzee and Waddenzee, were delivered in February and April respectively. The third tug, named the Zuiderzee, is scheduled for delivery in June. Their maintenance will be handled by the nearby Damen Shipyards Den Helder.

For the Swedish Royal Navy, Damen Shiprepair Oskarshamnsvarvet on Sweden’s Baltic coast will be undertaking maintenance for their two Damen ASD 3010 tugs (ICE class), referred to as HMS Hector and HMS Hercules.

MX-suite software will be utilized for the remote monitoring of the operations of all five tugs, delivering real-time data on engine hours to ensure that servicing occurs precisely when it is required.

The procurement of the tugs represents a collaborative effort between the Defence Material Organisation of the Netherlands and the Swedish Forsvarets Materielverk (FMV). The maintenance contract was executed by Anders P. Nilsson, Head of Surface Warfare at the Swedish Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Defence of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (Captain RNLN J. F. Kwak, Head of Project Procurement, representing the Dutch Materiel Organisation), Jelle Loosman, MD of Damen Shipyards Den Helder, and René Berkvens, CEO of the Damen Shipyards Group.

Peter van den Berg, Deputy Director of Damen Shipyards Den Helder, remarked: “The maintenance management solutions that we and Damen Shiprepair Oskarshamnsvarvet will be delivering will ease the workload of the navies in ensuring that these vessels remain fully operational at all times. The Den Helder facility is conveniently located close to where the Dutch tugs are stationed, allowing us also to manage the storage of spare parts. In Den Helder, we have established a specialized training team to assist organizations and companies in adapting to the emerging technology of hybrid vessels. The Oskarhamn facility is strategically located between the operational areas of the Swedish tugs. This bi-directional flow of information generated ensures that our vessels continue to evolve to meet our customers’ needs effectively.”
