FAU Secures Five Embraer A-29 Super Tucano Aircraft by Transforming Options into Concrete Orders

Embraer has announced today that the Uruguayan Air Force (FAU) and the Uruguayan Ministry of National Defense (MDN) have transformed options for five A-29 Super Tucano aircraft into confirmed purchases. This agreement is part of a commitment established in August 2024, when the FAU declared a confirmed order for one aircraft along with the options that have now transitioned. The contract also encompasses mission assets, integrated logistics solutions, and a flight simulator. This agreement is integral to a fleet modernization initiative aimed at amplifying the operational capacity of the FAU.

“The partnership between Embraer and the Uruguayan Air Force has been flourishing, and we are especially excited to unveil this arrangement during a year that marks the 50th anniversary of Embraer’s inaugural export contract with Uruguay,” stated Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security. “We are poised to deliver the finest multimission aircraft to the FAU while providing our complete support to boost their operational readiness and strengthen their ability to conduct strategic missions such as border surveillance.”

“Acquiring the A-29 Super Tucano and the flight simulator will equip Uruguay with essential air defense capabilities and is part of the obligation taken on by the government to modernize the resources and apparatus of our Armed Forces to execute their designated missions,” remarked Uruguayan Minister of National Defense, Armando Castaingdebat.

“This addition elevates our technological standing, and upon finalization of the A-29 procurement, it enables us to address, alongside Embraer, the emerging regional security frameworks,” stated General Luis H. De León, Commander in Chief of the Uruguayan Air Force.

With Uruguay and the recent acquisition of the first A-29 in NATO configuration (A-29N) by Portugal, the A-29 Super Tucano now counts 20 operators globally, garnering over 290 orders. The number of air forces utilizing the A-29 Super Tucano continues to grow due to its unparalleled combination of attributes, making it the most economical, accessible, and adaptable choice.

For Air Forces in search of a reliable, comprehensive, effective, trustworthy, and cost-efficient solution on a single platform, alongside exceptional operational versatility, the A-29 Super Tucano presents an expansive array of missions such as close air support, air surveillance, special operations, air interdiction, JTAC duties, forward air controller (FAC) tasks, air and tactical coordination (TAC), Armed ISR, border monitoring, reconnaissance, air escort, and basic, operational, and advanced training, as well as a transition to air superiority fighters, and JTAC/LIFT and FAC training.
