The steel-cutting ceremony for the first patrol vessel (OPV – Offshore Patrol Vessel) commissioned by the Qatari Ministry of Defence under the national naval procurement initiative occurred today at the Muggiano (La Spezia) shipyard.
In securing this esteemed contract, Fincantieri has outperformed its rivals thanks to a project acknowledged as the most cutting-edge and innovative, bolstered by substantial experience in constructing high-tech vessels.
The agreement, valued at approximately 4 billion euros for Fincantieri, outlines the provision of seven surface vessels, including four corvettes, one amphibious vessel (LPD – Landing Platform Dock), and two patrol vessels (OPV – Offshore Patrol Vessel), along with support services in Qatar for an additional 10 years following the delivery of the vessels. All units will be meticulously constructed in Fincantieri’s Italian shipyards.
The inaugural patrol vessel, for which the initial steel has been cut today, is designed in accordance with RINAMIL Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) regulations and will be a versatile type of ship, capable of performing various tasks ranging from surveillance to operational combat. It measures approximately 63 meters in length and 9.2 meters in width, with a maximum velocity of 30 knots and will be equipped to accommodate 38 crew members onboard.
The propulsion system comprises four variable-pitch propellers, with two positioned on the starboard side and two on the port side, each coupled with a diesel propulsion engine.
Additionally, the vessel will possess the capability to operate a RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) via a crane situated at the stern.
